Q: Your career has taken you from Korea to the USA. Can you walk us through this transition? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?

A: Absolutely! My Messe Frankfurt odyssey began in our Korean branch, where I worked with outbound sales. When the opportunity for permanent U.S. residency came knocking, I leaped at the chance to join our North American team.

The transition was both challenging and exhilarating. In Korea, I specialized in outbound sales, but moving to the U.S. branch meant adapting to inbound sales and exhibition management – quite a shift! This change represented a completely different work paradigm, which pushed me to expand my skills rapidly. I had to learn about the U.S. textile market, master new working methods, and adapt to organizing exhibitions as a host rather than a participant.

The biggest challenge was adapting to a new cultural and professional environment while maintaining the high standards I set for myself. I overcame this by staying curious, asking questions, and always being willing to learn from my colleagues and experiences. Working with sales partners from various countries also broadened my perspective significantly.

Q: Your colleagues describe you as hardworking, sweet, and diligent. How do these qualities contribute to your success at Messe Frankfurt, and how do they reflect in your day-to-day work?

A: I'm touched to hear that my colleagues view me that way. I believe these qualities are essential in a global company like Messe Frankfurt. My hardworking nature drives me to give my best in every project, whether it's organizing an exhibition or working with international partners. I always strive to go the extra mile, which I think contributes to the success of our events and client relationships.

Being sweet – or perhaps better described as kind and approachable – is crucial in building strong relationships with both colleagues and clients. In a multicultural environment, a friendly demeanor can break down barriers and foster better communication.

As for diligence, I believe it's the key to maintaining high standards in our work. I pay close attention to details, follow through on commitments, and always look for ways to improve our processes. This approach has helped me adapt to new challenges and consistently deliver quality results.

In my day-to-day work, these qualities manifest in various ways. I might spend extra hours ensuring an exhibition plan is perfect, take time to understand a colleague's or client's perspective, or meticulously review contracts to ensure everything is in order.

Q: How has your experience differed between Messe Frankfurt Korea and Messe Frankfurt North America? What insights have you gained about the work culture in both countries?

A: The differences are quite significant and go beyond just the scope of work. In the United States, I've noticed that individual initiative and results are highly valued. If you take responsibility, work hard, produce good results, and show ambition in your career, the company recognizes and rewards your efforts appropriately.

This merit-based system, where opportunities and rewards are equally available to everyone, is a significant motivator. It encourages employees to take their work seriously and strive for excellence. Another key difference is the directness in communication. In the U.S., I've learned to express my thoughts more explicitly and to engage in open discussions about ideas or concerns. This was an adjustment from the more implicit communication style common in Korea.

These insights have helped me bridge cultural gaps when working with international partners and have made me a more versatile professional.

Q: Outside of work, we hear you're quite the marathon runner. Can you tell us more about this passion? How does it influence your professional life?

A: Yes, running marathons has become a significant part of my life outside work. I've completed five marathons in recent years, including events in Chicago and Osaka. These international marathons have been incredibly exciting and adventurous experiences, each leaving me with unique impressions and unforgettable memories.

Marathon running has taught me valuable lessons that I apply to my professional life. It's all about endurance, pacing yourself for the long haul, and pushing through challenges. These are skills that directly translate to managing long-term projects or navigating the ups and downs of the exhibition industry.

Moreover, participating in international marathons has given me a unique way to experience different cultures. It's a reminder of the global nature of our work at Messe Frankfurt and how we bring people together from all over the world.

The discipline required for marathon training also spills over into my work life. It's taught me the importance of setting goals, creating a plan to achieve them, and consistently putting in the effort day after day. Whether I'm preparing for a marathon or a major exhibition, the principles of dedication and continuous improvement remain the same.

Q: What advice would you give to others looking to thrive in a global company like Messe Frankfurt?

A: Based on my experience, I would offer several pieces of advice:

  1. Maintain a positive and proactive attitude: Always approach your work and colleagues with positivity and initiative. This attitude is contagious and can open up numerous opportunities.
  2. Respect and kindness are key: Treat everyone with respect and kindness, but also learn to convey your thoughts accurately. In a global company, clear and respectful communication is crucial.
  3. Keep an open mind: Be more open-minded than anyone else. This willingness to learn and adapt is essential in a multicultural environment.

By following these principles, I believe anyone can thrive and find fulfilling opportunities within Messe Frankfurt's global network.
